Review: Dark Void Zero

The Review
I know, I know. It's not that new if you happen to own a Nintendo DSi but now that the game is released on the PC (and iPhone too), I think it's time for me to finally try it out and tell you people what I think about it.

If you don't know what this game is all about, shame on you. Dark Void Zero is an 8-bit spin-off of a game called Dark Void, it was a pretty average game on the X360, PS3 and PC with pretty cool ideas, but they could have used those ideas a lot better and there was some technical problems with the PC-version but don't worry! Zero isn't anything like it's big brother and delivers you excellence in almost every way.

The first time you start up Dark Void Zero. You notice something strange. What is that? What is this feeling inside me? It's Captain Nostalgia kicking ass with catchy chiptune music, oh so sweet 8-bit graphics and damn hard gameplay if you compare it to modern shooters.

The main character's name is Rusty and Rusty's objective is to destroy the alien oppressors with the help of no other than Nikola Tesla who gives briefings and information on your current mission and that's really all there is to the story. The rest of the game is just shooting aliens and collecting power-ups and that's how it's supposed to be.

The genre of this game is pure classical platforming action with a little twist, the jet pack. You can use it to boost Rusty high up to the skies or hover like a hummingbird and shoot at the same time. The controls feel very solid and that's very important in a game like this. The game supports the X360 gamepad, my Logitech ChillStream worked fine and I suggest you to use some kind of gamepad too because it will make things much more pleasant.

There are three pretty large levels and they are all designed so that most of the time players have to remember different enemy movement and shooting patterns just like in the old NES games. If you haven't played games like this before, I warn you, the boss fights will drive you insane.

All this is is augmented with awesome music and sound effects that will surely make you want to play this game again and again, maybe even on the hardest difficulty mode, if you are hardcore enough. If that's too easy for your mighty skills, then how about unlocking that achievement which requires the completion of the whole game with no lives lost at all?

My final verdict. This game is awesome. Go and play it. Now.
