Top 5 Indie Timewasters #5: Spelunky
by Matias Peltonen | Thursday 27th May 2010
Spelunky, also known as the game where you die a lot but you still want to play more. If you haven't played it yet, you don't probably know that much about indie games but that's why I'm here, to tell you about the best of the best.

The game tells you the story of Spelunker, an unnamed hero who resembles Indiana Jones in almost every way. He has the hat, the whip, and the problematic dungeons filled with gold and other various treasures to grab. Your job is to guide him through all the traps, including rolling boulders and snakes.

First time playing, the game seems a very basic platformer. There's jumping involved, you must whip bats and throw bombs at giant spiders and all that, but after you have played for some time and died on more than one occasion you understand that there is a lot more to Spelunky.

You've got randomly-generated levels, instant death situations and a pile of different items such as in rogue-like games, and that is exactly why Spelunky is one of the better time wasters available. The game is simple enough that almost anyone can learn it, but so hard to master that you will accidentally waste a night or two when you should be sleeping.
