We are all familiar with the traditional city simulator - building cities around the needs of the populace, placing buildings and parks and squares in strategic locations to keep your citizens happy, all the while trying to balance the finances, ignore the advisors and keep up with the ever changing needs of the city. It's a manic and frantic situation, and usually presents a challenge that you can rarely ever manage. It's also a formula that has been done to death.
So, has Paradox Interactive managed to break the formula? Find out after the jump. |

So, after receiving a phone call from a very sweet sounding lady, and in a desperate attempt to pretend I'm a real journalist, I was, indeed, invited to central Birmingham. Not usually an invitation to shout about, or even accept at anything other than gun point, however on this occasion I'd be saddling into Brummy land to go visit the Playstation Beta Rooms. Fancy eh?
So here's a breakdown and impressions of EVERYTHING we managed to play, and all the extra little bits we managed to find out by bothering all the reps to the point of physical violence. They might not be asking us back [...] |

After this year's E3, it seems '3D' can no longer be uncomfortably ignored and ushered awkwardly out of the room whenever it brings attention to itself in conversation. Whilst the role reversal with motion controls has this year seen Nintendo not really bothering and Microsoft and Sony flailing their arms boisterously yelling 'guess who's tardy to the party', the other BIG PUSH by two thirds of the Big Three is of course STEREOSCOPIC 3D, or variants thereof.
It seems sometime a couple of years ago, in a fancy marketing office perched on a medium-depth circle of hell, some important men with fancy suits and fancy bank accounts sat around thinking "WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH GOLDEN CURTAIN RAIL HOOKS. How can we get more golden curtain rail hooks? Spend the money we've already got? Certainly not. What we need to do is take our drying up cinema business and drag the people back through the door by their collar beating them with a picture of James Cameron and telling them what to like." This worked. Tremendously well [...] |

So the game is much less than a month away now, and agents still buzzing from an OD of agility orbs from the previous game are no doubt counting down the days. Luckily, GamerCorner managed to get hold of the demo an astonishing FOUR DAYS early. So. What's it like?
Cracking would be an appropriate word, but I won't use it at the risk of being hunted down by, well anyone who read it really, and having them insert screwdrivers into my face. I'm one of the unlucky few who hasn't managed to play the first game to any considerable degree, and this information has, once or twice, resulted in a scoffing face from the recipient. So I hear it's cracking. Er, good, sorry [...] |

In this edition of Annoying Video Game Characters, we look at a classic character which has served Spyro the Dragon well for the past 12 years, as his guide, his health meter, and, later, as an annoying element in what would otherwise be a brilliant set of games. Yes, today, we are looking at Sparx.
Sparx, along with most of the main characters, made his first appearance in 1998, in the eponymous game 'Spyro the Dragon'. In this, he served alongside Spyro, fulfilling many roles, from helping Spyro find Gems scattered around the world to serving as his health bar. He would even change colour when Spyro was losing health, which was jolly helpful, and just to extend that, he would even poke and prod sheep as they went by, which, if you didn't already know, helped Spyro gain his health back [...] |

Spelunky, also known as the game where you die a lot but you still want to play more. If you haven't played it yet, you don't probably know that much about indie games but that's why I'm here, to tell you about the best of the best.
The game tells you the story of Spelunker, an unnamed hero who resembles Indiana Jones in almost every way. He has the hat, the whip, and the problematic dungeons filled with gold and other various treasures to grab. Your job is to guide him through all the traps, including rolling boulders and snakes [...] |

Remember those times when you had to go to a video game store and see that the game you wanted to buy wasn't there because it was sold out? Yeah, I remember it too. But you know you don't have to do that anymore, right? You always have Steam, Xbox Live Marketplace, Playstation Store or what ever makes you feel good to make things much easier.
Digital distribution is on the rise and this has initiated numerous conversations on whether it really is a good thing or not [...] |

Global recession has officially embedded itself into the minds of everyone and yet the gaming industry kicks on with increasing annual profits, I personally thank all those people such as myself who are low on funding and yet still scrape together the sacred cash to purchase these games. This dedication is what I enjoy about our future proof industry.
Although the gaming sector has officially become an integral part to any human development within our technological age, the beurocrats still define computer games as a social deviant. Normally when they decide to target an audience at least there is some conviction behind their verbal diarrhoea such as "chavs", "drugs, sex and rock n roll"... ok maybe the last one was a bit too much but aren't you sick of the same old bullshit. To be honest the news is the most powerful medium in which it brain washers its viewers to believe there is no hope left for our pitiful, war enraged planet [...] |
